Meet the Rhone Valley
Despite having so much to offer in the realm of wine, gastronomy, history and natural beauty, the Rhone Valley remains underappreciated and little-known to many visitors, who overlook it in favour of Paris or Provence. So follow us to experience a unique bespoke tour of this magnificent region.
Gastronomy
Acclaimed as the true capital of French gastronomy, even abroad, Lyon and the Rhone valley have much to offer foodies and gourmets. Boasting gorgeous old-world brasseries, legendary Lyon “boucheries”, and renowned Michelin-starred restaurants headed by world-famous chefs such as Paul Bocuse, the region is a genuine dream for anyone hoping to experience France’s world-acclaimed cuisine. We will take you on luxurious food tours that are entirely tailored to your tastes, and give you an authentic introduction to the region’s gourmet delights.
Wine tastings
Rhone Valley wines, in their remarkable diversity, offer rare aromatic strength and complexity. Fancying a glass of Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu or Crozes-Hermitage? The Rhone is the birthplace of fruity Beaujolais wines and more complex Côtes du Rhône grands crus. Our Lyon wine tours will allow you to discover the charming Beaujolais countryside with its rolling hills and quaint little villages studded with “Pierres dorées”: literally, golden stones.
For serious Syrah lovers, head south to the Côte Rôtie. The vineyards of the Rhone Valley abound with prestigious names: Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Hermitage, Saint Joseph, and countless others. Discover them all during a bespoke tour dedicated to wine.
Heading even further South with us, you will discover the powerful and prestigious Chateauneuf du Pape wines which are grown in nearly Provencal landscapes. There, you will be able to taste remarkable samples of a wine renowned worldwide for its complexity and density: it is in fact made from 13 different varieties of grapes!
Culture
Boasting 2000 years of history, astonishing landscapes, and sumptuous castles, Lyon and its surrounding region have much to offer the curious luxury traveler who wishes to get off the beaten path. Lyon has always been a famous city, especially during the Gallo-Roman era when it was still called Lugdunum, and served as the capital of Roman Gaul. The city’s unique Gallo-Roman sites and monuments stand alongside a remarkable heritage of medieval and Renaissance architecture. A center of silk-making for centuries, the old city also preserves unique passageways called “traboules” that allowed silk workers to transport wheelbarrows full of luxurious silks from their ateliers in the heights of the city down to the center for trade.
Art and history
Lyon has been listed since 1998 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Former capital of Gaul, the city is one of France’s oldest and most prestigious. Everywhere you look, history can be found: Roman Gaul and the birth of Christianity have left their mark on the Fourvière Hill; the Italian Renaissance is still visible in the Saint-Jean quarter; and seventeenth-century classicism is evident in Terreaux and the Hotel Dieu. Moving closer to the modern era, the city centre exhibits Haussmanian- style buildings not unlike those found in Paris; while modernist-style architecture characterises the Tony Garnier Concert Exhibition Hall and the Gerland Stadium. This is a city of so many faces and styles, you’ll never be bored.
Whatever you wish to focus on in the varied and culturally rich region, we will design exclusive and entirely personalised private tours and wine tours for you: ones inevitably coloured by the generosity and expertise of locals. We’ll help you encounter the region in authentic ways that allow you to understand it from an insider’s perspective.
